Cultural Partner Updates: Summer 2022

Thank you for your attention to what’s happening in the Golden Triangle. Here’s the latest from some of the many cultural institutions in our neighborhood.

Colorado Photographic Arts Center (CPAC)

Big news! CPAC is moving to a different location in the Golden Triangle in early 2023, to 1200 Lincoln Street, close to the Denver Art Museum and the History Colorado Center. The new space will have two galleries of amazing photography, an onsite darkroom as well as a state-of-the-art classroom where you can grow your photography skills!

Check out their current exhibition, Culture of Hair at their Bannock location. Runs May 12 through June 25, 2022.

Clyfford Still Museum

Clyfford Still, Art and the Young Mind is the current exhibition on view at the museum. The show is designed to engage both children and adults while revealing how children think about art. The exhibit will be on view through August 7, 2022. Using current research about the kinds of art children like at different ages, curators Bailey H. Placzek and Nicole Cromartie have installed five galleries devoted to contrast, scale, pattern, color, and the world around us.

To further develop the galleries, the curators asked local children to select and arrange their favorite artworks, share their perspectives for the gallery and audio content, and to help design interactive activities.

Now is the time to instill that love of art in the little ones in your life with a visit to see this amazing show! Buy tickets at https://clyffordstillmuseum.org/tickets and use promo code CLYFF during online checkout to save $2 on adult admission (reg. $10). Children ages 17 and under are always free.

Kirkland Museum of Fine & Decorative Art

Have you always thought that Grandma Jones’ butter dish was an amazing work of art? If so, it might be in the Kirkland (yes, this really happened to me!). The Kirkland has a vast collection of 4,400 artworks and objects on view: everything from sofas, radios and teacups highlighting the decorative arts to Vance Kirkland’s studio and works of art from Kirkland himself.

In 2022, the Kirkland is celebrating renowned American architect and designer, Frank Lloyd Wright. When designing an architectural masterpiece, Wright also developed furniture, tableware, and art glass. Some of these items from 11 different Wright projects will be shown from the Kirkland’s permanent collection beginning June 17 in a new show, Frank Lloyd Wright Inside the Walls.

Denver Art Museum (DAM)

As the DAM and its visitors continue to enjoy the new Martin Building, several exhibits of note are on view. Specifically,

The DAM has a worldwide reputation for acknowledging and exhibiting fashion as art and this latest exhibit will only enhance that reputation.

Now showing through October 16, 2022, and the first exhibit ever to explore the contributions and techniques of Mexican artist and designer Carla Fernandez , A Mexican Fashion Manifesto explores how the eponymous design house and its mobile studio, Taller Flora, link ancient and contemporary techniques to create modern fashion for a worldwide market.

More than 100 photographic works of art from around the world are highlighted in Modern Women, Modern Vision now on display through August 28, 2022. This diverse photographic collection “…celebrates the bold and dynamic contributions of women to the development and evolution of photography in the 20th century”.

The exhibit covers the 20th century to date and is arranged in six themes: Modernist Innovators, Documentary Photography and the New Deal, the Photo League, Modern Masters, Exploring the Environment, and The Global Contemporary Lens. Some items not to miss: Neeta Madagar’s fascinating flora series, Diane Arbus’ photographs covering life in NYC in the 1960s, and WPA sponsored photographer Dorothea Lange, who covered the Great Depression, the Dust Bowl and life in America almost 100 years ago.

Looking to get out your inner Game of Thrones battler? Then this upcoming show is for you!

As seen on the DAM website, the Age of Armor exhibit “…examines the historical context of armor and the pragmatic functions it served, as well as the ideological sentiments about armor throughout time, from the Middle Ages into the modern era”. The show is supplemented by many pieces from Denver’s own collection, exhibiting more than 100 pieces of armor and artifacts. It opens May 15, 2022 and is included with your general admission ticket.
